" 2 women, 2 eras both have secrets.."
Synopsis
When Alice Hale leaves a career to become a writer and follows her husband to the New York suburbs, she is unaccustomed to filling her days alone in a big, empty house.
But when she finds a vintage cookbook buried in the basement, she becomes captivated by its previous owner: 1950s housewife Nellie Murdoch.
As Alice cooks her way through the past, she realizes that within the pages Nellie left clues about her life.
Soon Alice learns that while a Baked Alaska may seem harmless, Nellie's secrets may have been anything but.
When Alice uncovers a more sinister, even dangerous, side to Nellie’s marriage, and has become increasingly dissatisfied with her own relationship, she begins to take control of her life and protect herself with a few secrets of her own.
My Review
This book is a magical and quite nostalgic jounery through 2 diffrent era's through the lives of 2 very diffrent women who at some point in time live in the same house
The old house, an old cookbook, and notes within it that slowly reveal the life of Nellie a house wife with an abusive husband
Alice who has secrets of her own and who was fired from her job stuck at home she finds Nellies old cookbook and it inspires Alice to try some of the recipes.
Within the margins and in the cookbook Alice finds notes about the life of Nellie back in the 1950’s.
Told in alternating chapters the stories and lives of Nellie and Alice are slowly laid bare.
this read is engaging and endearing a lovely look back in time with the cookbook and sub secant letters revealing Nellies life and slowly influencing Alice in the present day.
A book that pulls you in, with a lovely story and a feel good ending.
