Synopsis

Inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s classic thriller ‘Vertigo,’ the author of Deep Water returns with a unique and sinister novel about the beauty industry, a ghostwriter, and the reappearance of the lover she thought was dead.

When Maddy Wight is hired to ghostwrite the memoir of world-renowned cosmetic surgeon Angela Reynolds, she jumps at the chance to get her career back on track. But the deeper she digs, the more elusive the doctor becomes.

Confined to Angela’s glass-walled house in the Scottish Highlands, Maddy can’t shake the unsettling feeling of being watched. As a result, she is drawn ever closer to Angela’s enigmatic business partner Scott, whose mercurial moods change as quickly as the darkening moors outside.

Returning to London once the book is finished, Maddy is excited for their future together. But news of Scott’s death shatters the celebrations at the book’s launch party. Which is why, months later and still grieving, she is blindsided to see Scott entering a tube station just in front of her. It can’t be him, can it? After all, Scott is dead... or is he?

Jeopardy lurks in the places you least expect in this captivatingly modern and startling take on a classic suspense story.

My Review

A homage to Alfred Hitchcock's iconic film Vertigo, a true classic that I absolutely adore. I had a feeling there would be some unexpected twists in this story, but it exceeded all my expectations!

The story follows ghostwriter Maddy Wight as she embarks on a journey to the Scottish Highlands to work on the memoir of the renowned surgeon Angela Reynolds. From the moment Maddy meets Angela, she is met with coldness and demands, making it clear that Angela has a specific vision for the book that she is unwilling to compromise on.

As Maddy works in the secluded house, she forms a bond with Scott, Angela's business partner, who provides her with much-needed support as strange occurrences begin to unfold. From ghostly footsteps to mysteriously moved items, Maddy finds herself caught in a web of intrigue and suspense.

Upon returning to London, Maddy eagerly anticipates reuniting with Scott at the book launch, only to receive devastating news of his apparent suicide. Refusing to believe that Scott would take his own life, Maddy is consumed by grief and confusion.

However, when she spots a man who bears a striking resemblance to Scott, she is plunged into a whirlwind of uncertainty and doubt.

With each page turn, the mystery deepens, leaving readers on the edge of their seats as they unravel the intricate web of lies and deception.

This book is a gripping rollercoaster ride that will keep you hooked until the very last page, eager to uncover the truth behind the enigmatic characters and their dark secrets. Get ready for a thrilling and unforgettable reading experience that will leave you breathless with anticipation!
