"A COLD CASE THAT BURNS, A CITY ABOUT TO IGNITE "
Synopsis
ONE FALSE MOVE
Someone is setting fire to Sheffield. It starts with small things – dustbins and abandoned sheds so people don’t notice at first. But the calling card is there if you look for it.
WILL IGNITE
Soon the fires spread to offices, homes, people. The Firewatcher’s followers are growing and they have one particular blaze in mind – one that the police would do well to pay attention to.
THE CITY
But DS Adam Tyler is distracted by a case, one that he is unknowingly connected to. And if he can’t discover the link between the fires and himself, he will burn – along with the entire city.
Fans of Adrian McKinty, Ian Rankin, Sharon Bolton and Broadchurch will love Firewatching, a compulsive, breathless and twisty thriller with an incredible lead detective at its heart
My Review
In the book world of crime and police procedural it takes a lot for a book stand out from the crowd but Firewatcher does all that and more with aplomb.
A house set ablaze and a body found bricked up in the walls, all signs show they were bricked in alive and The house’s owner, Graham Cartwright, mysteriously vanished six years ago.
DS Adam Tyler is tasked with solving this case, Joined by DI Jim Doggett, the original investigator in the disappearance, and Amina Rabbani, a young police officer who sees the case as her stepping stone to CID, it clear from the start that this team faces a more complex case than they ever could have imagined especially when the personal and professional lines are blurred.
This book was a stand out debut, gritty and real, where everyone one is suspect and you don't know who or what to trust, twists, turns and lies in every direction leave you breathless
Clinging on to what you think you know as the case and the characters lives come to a head.
Such a wild a varied cast of characters each no matter how small there part fleshed out and real, I really felt like I was enjoying a cracking TV crime series.
I gelled especially with DS Adam Tyler very smart, yet still feeling he must prove himself due to his sexuality and other family trauma mean he has a certain strength and edge and in he fights for his causes with a passion.
While we a kept in the dark till the very end about just who the Firewatcher is, the inclusion of the blog posts by this character was inspired as we learn bit by bit his story and how twisted his thoughts are. I found this added such a unique and creepy vibe to the read.
Firewatcher as I said before stands out in the realms of police procedural, captivating thrilling and like all good series leaves you wanting more, I am a fast fan of the authors writing style and this series already, bring on the next!

Author Bio
Russ Thomas was born in Essex, raised in Berkshire and now lives in Sheffield.
He grew up in the 80s reading anything he could get from the library, writing stories, watching large amounts of television, playing videogames, and largely avoiding the great outdoors.
He spent five years trying to master playing the electronic organ and another five trying to learn Spanish. It didn’t take him too long to realise that he’d be better off sticking to the writing After a few ‘proper’ jobs (among them: pot-washer, optician’s receptionist, supermarket warehouse operative, call-centre telephonist and storage salesman) he discovered the joys of bookselling, where he could talk to people about books all day.
His debut novel Firewatching is the first book in the DS Adam Tyler series.
