"What will be discovered beneath the hallowed ground? and how will it change the future of the planet above?..."
Synopsis
This magical story is inspired by the most haunting and least explored country in the world - Namibia - with its foggy Skeleton Coast, buried goldmines, shocking secrets and awe-inspiring sand dunes.
Spread across the face of its deserts are hundreds of miles of ‘fairy circles’ : vast enough to be seen from space.
They grow and die with the same lifespan as humans, yet no-one has been able to explain why or how they appear.
Then one day, three teenagers and their families arrive from different parts of the globe. Helped by bushmen, the buried possessions of a Victorian explorer, and a golden leopard, they solve the mystery of the African Circles.
What will be discovered beneath the hallowed ground?
And how will it change the future of the planet above it?
My Review
This book is utterly magical and I loved every minute of reading it, I was sucked in by the magic of the blurb and it absolutely lived up to my hopes.
A group of teenagers from different parts of the world, come to Namibia and are intrigued by the Fairy Circles of the Namibia desert. and who would not be! 1500 miles of perfect circles, shrouded in myth and legend....
how did they get there?
who/what makes them and why?.
As part of a school project they investigate the Circles, the history and what they mean to others, all while the kids parents deal with political events in the region.
I found I liked all the kids as characters, and I enjoyed seeing there friendships develop. As a YA read this book is well placed to appeal to many teens and tween's alike with characters like this who are relate-able and facing a huge adventure in a new place.
Also the parents arc is interesting dealing with the Chinese miners and the events seeing who they cope in the area and the struggles it brings to the families was all very well written.
More important to me was the authors utter beauty in his writing for Namibia itself I just felt transported by his words to this beautiful place.
I try to be a no spoiler reviewer so I can not say to much but the ending was just a punch to the gut so emotional, just wow!
All together a really lovely read with a fantastically thrilling and magical plot that highlights issues not only in growing up, but in serious areas looking at not only politics but environmental aspects such as climate change and the future of our world.
