"Even if she has nothing to hide, perhaps she has everything to lose . . . "
Synopsis
Suspended from duty after her last case ended in the high-profile arrest of one of Britain's wealthiest men, DC Constance Fairchild is trying to stay away from the limelight.
Fate has other ideas . . .
Coming home to her London flat, Constance stumbles across a young man, bloodied, mutilated and barely alive.
She calls it in and is quickly thrown into the middle of a nationwide investigation . . .
It seems that the victim is just the latest in a string of similar ritualistic attacks. No matter that she is off-duty, no matter that there are those in the Met who would gladly see the back of her, Con can't shake her innate determination to bring the monsters responsible for this brutality to justice.
Trouble always seems to find her, and even if she has nothing to hide, perhaps she has everything to lose . . .
My Review
I have mentioned before what a huge fan I am of this author, I firmly believe that when you see his name and the excitement of seeing the bold cover designs of his books you know you are in for a great read!
This is the second book in the Constance Fairchild series, The first been "No Time To Cry" released this time last year.
This book pick's up where the first left off, Constance or Con is still dealing with the fallout from first novel.
Here she exposed a paedophile ring with a lot of wealthy people, some high up in the police. She is dealing with the fallout at work and in her personal life as she is been harassed by the press about the events.
Just when you think she cannot cope with anymore Con discovers a mutilated young man who is near death, near her home. Con is thrown in to the investigation, working with colleagues that don't trust her and mixing in the strange religious cult that seems to be involved, you are in for a thrilling read.
My favourite parts of this book are the nods to the authors fan's, from Con staying with Madame Rose who is a character from the authors bestselling Tony McLean series. to some of the fellow officers she meets also from that series, I enjoyed the feel that both these series are from the same settings and time as they intertwined.
I feel this book would work as a stand alone but I don't know why you would not read them all, the writing and the characters are just so well done that you want to enjoy them more, so why not go from the start.
This book had great pace, twist and turns all the time and more surprises than I could count, James Oswald has done it again!, and the brilliant and thrilling works of this author seem if at all possible to be getting better and better! Which leaves fans myself eagerly awaiting his next novel.
