" Elegant, chilling and beautifully written, Sea of Bones is a rare thing: a book that asks big questions while gripping the reader completely. A dazzling debut’ Rosie Walsh, author of The Man Who Didn’t Call "

My Review

Sea of Bones is Deborah O'Donoghue's debut novel and what a debut!

This is a slow-burn psychological thriller which with its short chapters makes the time when reading pass so quickly! and there is always the temptation of just reading one more chapter!!

Juliet MacGillivray is devastated by the death of her beloved niece, Beth Winters. The police deemed it a suicide but Juliet cannot accept this.

She sets out to investigate for herself while visiting the place where Beth lived while studying. The more questions she asks the more Juliet realises there are people who do not want her to look in to Beth's death any further.

The plot is suspenseful with lots going on and and lots of characters and for this reason you need to keep your mind on task when reading! personally this added to the feeling of the book for me and I enjoyed all the busyness.

The writing was fantastic, with such beautiful detail in the descriptions especially of the areas in and around North East Scotland. This jam packed read Also touches on some really topical real-world issues including political corruption, immigration, mental health, suicide, child sexual exploitation, as well as loss and grief. some of these made uncomfortable reading but are key to the story and handled so well.

There are a some fantastic twists and turns most of which i did not expect! and I would recommend this book to anyone looking for an intense and suspense filled novel, A stunning debut and I look forward to more from this author!
