"From the best selling Author of Animal Husbandry.. "
Synopsis
Life hasn’t gone according to Judy’s plan. Her career as a children’s book author offered a glimpse of success before taking an embarrassing nose dive.
Teddy, now a teenager, treats her with some combination of mortification and indifference. Her best friend is dying. And her husband, Gary, has become a pot-addled professional “snackologist” who she can’t afford to divorce.
On top of it all, she has a painfully ironic job writing articles for a self-help website—a poor fit for someone seemingly incapable of helping herself.
Brilliantly tapping into the insecurities and anxieties that most of us keep under wraps, and with a voice that is at once gleefully irreverent and genuinely touching, Laura Zigman has crafted a glorious new classic for anyone taking fumbling steps toward happiness.
My Review
Separation Anxiety fits firmly in the "not my usual genre" catogory and when the chance to be part of the blog tour presented itself I could not wait to get stuck in.
I am sure like many this Lockdown situation the groundhog day feel is making so many Book lovers step out of there comfort zones and read somethig that just feels fresh and diffrent.
In this read we meet Judy a 50 year old who has found herself living a life she never expected. Seperated yet still stuck Co-habiting with her husband, stuck and unable to afford divorce at the moment so they are living on top of one another yet wanting to move on.
Also Judys is struggling with her now teenage son, the teenage years are hard for anybody but she is really feeling the almost loss of the young boy he was, heartbreakingly her best friend is dying and all these events, struggles and stresses mean she has writers block and now her career is sailing down the river too, add some pot to the equasion and the madness starts.
Then one day Judy finds an old baby carrier and desperate to find a silimar comforting weight to a baby uses the family dog, this event leads her to wearing the dog all the time in the carrier!! most think she has lost it but for judy this is about coming to terms with her world and moving forward.
I loved this books originalness and utter raw and emotive writing, I felt for Judy and the life she has fallen into I flipped between wanting to shake her and ask what the hell was going on to wanting to give her the biggest hug she seemed to desperately need.
For me the read was less fiction and felt more like a diary of sorts, we work through Judys life and struggles we laugh and cry along with her. This book is steeped in sadness but the author mixes just the right about of humour that makes this read absolutley heartwarming and inspiring journey that we take with these charaters.
A original and in the end a heartwarming tale, this is sure to be a classic tale of moving forward and realising the life you are living may not be what you expected but can be wonderful anyway, you just have to decide to make it so.
